In January 2010 the SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE, Inc 501c (3), a not-for-profit organization, established a new program, “SDI - American winter.” Several Ukrainian students, among the finalists of the prestigious "Petro Jacyk Ukrainian language competition," would be selected to have an opportunity to visit the United States over Christmas holidays. Ukrainian families from DC, NJ, PA, NY, CT, MA, RI and other states would host these students for two weeks in the first half of January.
These families introduce and help these students to immerse into American life. They provide full board and lodging and organize educational excursions during the two weeks in United States. The families supervise the students and escort them personally or by authorized delegates in the travel from and to JFK New York airport and otherwise during the stay.
The host family is responsible for notifying the student's parents in case of medical, legal or other emergencies. They must also report to the SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE’s representatives any accidents which happened with student and coordinate with Institute all student activity, trips and entertainment.
The SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE will provide two weeks free travel health-insurance coverage and a free round trip flight from Kyiv to New York for the selected students.
We hope that the Ukrainian students return back to their homeland with improved English skills, inspired and enthused with practical ideas about our democratic society, as well as re-invigorated to support the learning of the Ukrainian language in their region.
